easyDNS CEO, Career Contrarian & AntiGuru

Multi-Media World

My band, The Parkdale Hookers, just released this video off our new record Echo Bubble Overdrive.

BoingBoing called it “A great punk anthem”. If I get hit by a bus tomorrow I won’t have to worry about “dying with my music inside me”, as this song and the video pretty much says all I have to say. On everything

Why We Will Not Be Registering easyDNS.SUCKS

facebook-sucksSimilar to how it's getting harder these days to differentiate actual news from The Onion satires, reality takes on a somewhat surreal timbre when it starts to imitate your April Fool's gags from yesteryear…

In 2011 we joked "easyDNS To Launch .SUX TLD", in which we posited a thinly veiled extortion racket to goad squeamish IP holders into "defending their trademarks" under a TLD which was "not intended to encourage registrations which disparage any company or entity.", but would be available for registration at blatantly exorbitant prices.

Among the steady barrage of new TLDs in the Great Namespace Expansion … Read the rest

easyDNS to Rebrand as easy.WTF

After 16 years as an iconic .com startup, easyDNS will shed its moniker and rebrand as easy.WTF.

At a press conference this morning, easy.WTF CEO Mark Jeftovic explained "dot COM is a dinosaur. That era is over. The Zeitgeist of the times we live in is captured perfectly by WTF".

The company foresees a meteoric rise in .WTF registrations as compared to .COM, going so far to predict that the total number of .WTF domains would dwarf the current incumbent by 2017.

"We want to be on the right side of this tectonic shift", said Jeftovic, adding "no pun … Read the rest

easyDNS To Be Dropped From Andy Lehrer Lawsuit

Pursuant to a settlement, easyDNS is being dropped by Andy Lehrer from the Tim O'Rourke / causepimps.ca defamation lawsuit.

Under the terms of the settlement easyDNS will not pay Mr. Lehrer anything and will remove the offending webpages / URLs upon a judicial finding that they are defamatory (something our Plain English Terms of Service says we will do anyway).

Somewhat reminiscent of the Seinfeld episode where Jerry pays a contractor a substantial sum of money to restore his kitchen to its exact pre-reno state, we feel we've still gotten the short end of the stick in this comedy. After … Read the rest

Is Rogers Throttling VPN Connections?

Update – April 3/2015

I’m not so sure about this anymore. Since writing this article I had a Rogers tech over and he replaced the cable in the back yard. My Rogers connection is now a lot faster. > 30Mb/sec download. My A/B tests between VPN and no VPN are roughly the same since. I’ve seen some links to this post out there so I should mention my latest findings.

After reading Michael Geist’s article about a senior VP at Rogers calling on the Canadian Government to shutdown VPNs it occurred to me that I have been experiencing chronically crappy … Read the rest

An Open Letter to Bittorrent and File Sharing Sites

The-Birthday-Massacre-3-katherine1517-35112284-1500-914

The Birthday Massacre, who is managed by my former college prof Terry MacManus. During our telephone conversation discussing the effect of filesharing on content creators I downloaded their entire 6-album catalog via bittorrent. For free.

Since our successful wrangling with another ICANN registrar over the rights  of domain name holders and the responsibilities of registrars when transferring their names, we have unsurprisingly become a "goto" registrar for bittorrent and filesharing sites.

I wanted to clarify the easyDNS stance on this because I think the entire filesharing space has a limited time window to position for the future and nothing less … Read the rest
